Teenagers taking I-pill unhealthy say doctors

I-pill is a product targeted at her 38-year-old mother but it’s 16-year-old Pihu Vohra (name changed) who is using the widely advertised emergency contraceptive Intelligent Pill, or i-pill, that can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of having ‘unsafe’ sex.

Pihu isn’t the only one. “This month, at least 10 to 12 teenagers have come to us for the i-pill,” says Vinay Malik of Apollo Pharmacy, Kailash Colony. “After I learnt about the pill, I decided to be doubly safe,” says Divya Goel (name changed), a Class XI student. Now, her partner uses the condom and later, she pops the pill.
“This can be very harmful as it’s a hormonal pill,” cautions gynaecologist Dr Rita Bakshi. Frequent use can cause ovarian damage and menstrual problems, especially among younger girls, she adds.

Avoiding data plans, and Android vs. BlackBerry

Choosing a new cell phone is not as easy as it used to be. Just a few years ago, you'd simply pick out one of the free new phones that your wireless carrier offered you as an incentive to sign up for another two-year contract.
But things are much more complicated now. Not only are there more phones to choose from, but there are different types of phones. There are sophisticated smartphones, quick messaging devices, 3G multimedia phones, basic feature phones, and more. And each category of phones seems to come with a complicated offering of voice, text, and Internet data plans.
In an effort to demystify the confusing landscape of cell phones and service plans, I have answered some reader questions that go to the heart of these issues. I've explained which phones can be added to family plans to keep those data charges low, so parents don't have to mortgage their homes to pay for their kids' cell phone bills. I've explained some of the differences between the new Google Android phones versus other devices, such as Research In Motion's BlackBerry phones. And I've tried to shed some light on what might happen to Google's ownNexus One smartphone.

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is to quit Test cricket after the second game of their series against Australia.
The 30-year-old only confirmed his return to Tests after a four-year absence in May when he was named skipper for the tour to England.
But he announced his decision to step down following Pakistan's 150-run loss to Australia at Lord's on Friday.
"I would rather focus on one-day and Twenty20 cricket," all-rounder Afridi told BBC Test Match Special.

"It is a board decision, but I would think Salman Butt is the best man for the [captaincy] job now."
The 'home series' against Australia is taking place in England because of ongoing concerns about the security of touring teams in Pakistan.
And although Afridi will lead the team in the second Test against Australia, which starts at Headingley next Wednesday, the Pakistan Cricket Board will have to move quickly to appoint a successor as it is followed immediately by a four-match series against England.
606: DEBATE
Bowled
"I did the wrong thing. I think my temperament is not good enough for Test cricket and I am struggling with my side as well," he said.
"In Test cricket the demands are totally different. You can say I am not strong enough mentally. Captains should be an example for youngsters and for the team but I didn't show any example. I am not capable of playing Test cricket."
Afridi was given the captaincy in the wake of Pakistan's dismal tour to Australia last winter where they lost every international fixture.
The PCB subsequently gave indefinite bans to former skipper Younus Khan and Mohammad Yousuf because of dressing-room disharmony and although the bans were subsequently lifted, Yousuf decided to retire and Younus was not selected for the current tour.
The decision to exclude Younus was a mistake, according to Afridi.
"We need experienced players in these English conditions. We need Younus Khan," he commented.
Despite being one of one of the most aggressive and exciting one-day batsmen in world cricket, Afridi has struggled to adapt his approach to the five-day game.
He has made five Test centuries during his career, but gave his wicket away with a rash shot in each innings at Lord's, where he made scores of 31 and two.
"He feels he doesn't fit into this and for the best interests of the team he will step down," coach Waqar Younis commented.
"It's hard to pressure him [to carry on]. He feels it's just not right for him at the moment. He believes in himself but it was just not a match for him here."
Although Afridi intends to miss the Tests against England, he is likely to return for the Twenty20 and one-day games which follow.
And Waqar said he could retain the captaincy for those formats of the game.
International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat, meanwhile, said it was likely Pakistan would have to continue playing at neutral venues for the "foreseeable future".
But he told Test Match Special that there were "still issues to be resolved" at government level before Pakistan could play a series against India at English grounds.

Apple is offering a free case to every owner of its iPhone 4.
Apple boss Steve Jobs unveiled the offer at a press conference called to tackle the ongoing speculation about the iPhone 4's antenna problem.
The case will help overcome a widely reported issue in which phone signal strength was drained when the phone was held a certain way.
Declaring "We're not perfect", Mr Jobs said reception problems were endemic throughout the smartphone industry.
To get their free case, owners will be able to apply via the Apple website from 22 July. Mr Jobs said Apple could not make enough for all owners of the phone but would source a supply and offer a range of cases.
Based on retail prices of iPhone cases, supplying one to all three million customers could cost Apple about $180m (£118m).
Mr Jobs also extended an offer to iPhone 4 users to give them a full refund if they were still unhappy with the handset's performance. This offer will be available until 30 September.
"They had to do something," Van Baker, research vice president at Gartner, told BBC News.
"The buzz kept getting louder and louder and louder and the evidence kept mounting more and more and more. They just couldn't ignore it."
Brian Marshall, managing director of Gleacher & Company, said he did not think the negative headlines hurt Apple in the marketplace though he was pleased to see it take action.
"This has been blown out of proportion and is a media firestorm," he said.
Common problem
Apple called the press conference at which the case offer was made in response to ongoing speculation about the antenna issue.
The problem is thought to be caused by the steel case of the phone which houses several of the phone's antennas. Holding the phone on the lower left bridges the gap between two antenna depleting the signal.
Putting a case or "bumpers" around the phone stops this gap being bridged.
Opening the conference, Mr Jobs said that the drop in signal strength was not a problem "unique" to the iPhone 4.
"This has been blown so out of proportion, it's incredible," he said.
Apple had been looking closely at the issue since the first reports of problems surfaced just over three weeks ago, he said.
Videos comparing the iPhone 4 signal drop to other smartphones, such as the Blackberry Bold 9700, were aired by Mr Jobs during the conference.
He said this was a reflection of life in the smartphone world and presented a challenge for the whole industry.
Mr Jobs said the design of the iPhone 4, with a gap separating two sections of antenna, might have contributed to the problems as it perhaps subliminally encouraged people to touch that spot.
In the firm's defence, he cited figures from its Apple Care service arm which showed that only 0.55% of all iPhone 4 users have complained to the company about the issue.
"Historically for us, this is not a large number. This doesn't jive with what you read about this problem."
The number of phones returned to Apple was 1.7%, less than the 6% of 3GS models taken back to the shop by their owners.
Mr Jobs also shared data about the number of calls the iPhone4 dropped compared to the 3GS.
This revealed that the iPhone 4 drops only one call more per hundred than its predecessor.
He speculated that this was because most people who own a 3GS have a case for it. By contrast, he said, most iPhone4s leave Apple stores without a case.
Technology reporter Maggie Shiels who attended the conference for the BBC said it was a "sterling" performance by Mr Jobs.
"For Steve Jobs to publicly apologise to customers problem was amazing to hear," she said. "It didn't come until 45 mins into the event but it was clear throughout that he has taken the criticism personally."
"While he constantly underscored how hard Apple had worked to resolve the problem, he came out swinging for the fences and defended the phone to the hilt," she said.

Emergency services attend the aftermath of the attack
Investigators in Mexico say a deadly attack by suspected drug cartel members in the northern city of Ciudad Juarez was a car bomb set off by mobile phone.
It is believed to be the first attack of its kind since President Felipe Calderon took office in 2006, promising to curb powerful drugs gangs.
Two police officers and two medics answering an emergency were killed.
Police said the attack was retaliation for the arrest of a leader of the La Linea drug gang, Jesus Acosta Guerrero.

La Linea is part of the Juarez drug cartel.
"There were 10kg (22lb) of explosives, activated from a distance by a cellphone," Enrique Torres, a spokesman for the army in Ciudad Juarez, said.
At least 16 other people were injured in Thursday's attack, police said.
Ciudad Juarez is just across the border from El Paso, Texas. It has long been the battleground for cartels fighting for control of lucrative drug smuggling routes into the US.
More than 7,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico so far this year. Almost 25,000 have died in the past three and a half years, according to figures released by the office of Attorney General Arturo Chavez on Friday.
Mr Chavez said the rising figures demonstrated that the cartels were under pressure from the government crackdown.
He said 75,000 weapons had been decommissioned in the same period and 78,000 people had been detained in drug trafficking operations.
President Calderon has despatched thousands of troops to regain control of areas of the country long dominated by powerful cartels.

President Obama says there is much work to do, despite no oil leaking from BP's Gulf of Mexico well for 24 hours.
